In 2021 a small population of water voles were discovered in the network of drains within the Unity Connect Zone. A licence to capture the water vole population was secured and 12 water voles were caught by trained ecologists and were transported to a specialist facility in Devon.
In their absence a new habitat designed to increase the area and quality was created at Unity and now has the capacity to support 60 water voles.
Whilst they were in captivity they were paired and bred, and we are pleased to announce that 30 water voles have recently been released back into their new habitat and this number is expected to increase over the coming months.
